One of the most popular fitness exercise machines is the exercise bike but buying one is not as straightforward as going to the shop and picking one out. There are lots of things to think about before you do this. You will want to take into account not only the cost, type of bike, whether you prefer an upright or recumbent exercise bike, and how comfortable and effortless it is to adjust.
How Much Do You Want to Spend?
Certainly this is usually the most principal concern but you do not want to go for the cheapest exercise bike available as it might not last for very long, be comfortable or give you a good workout. A starting bike at a minimum will cost you roughly $200, and though this will be adequate it won’t have any of the features that can be found on higher priced exercise bikes. For not much more, say between $350 and $600 you’ll get a higher quality bike with some features such as heart rate control, magnetic resistance, a comfy seat and typically quiet and effortless operation.
For roughly $600 you will be able to obtain a high-quality exercise bike with all the features you may want. For this cost you should expect plenty of built-in workout programs, simple to use resistance control and LED display console, handlebars that are straightforward to modify and a good guarantee.
Exercise Bike Comfort
Evidently your exercise bike needs to be comfortable as you will be spending quite a lot of time on it! You will need a well padded seat and handlebars that can be adjusted without problems. Are you going to buy an upright or recumbent exercise bike? A lot of people find that recumbent exercise bikes are more comfortable to use than upright exercise bikes as you sit in a more reclined position so there is a reduced amount of stress on your back. Upright exercise bikes, although not quite as comfortable, do have the benefit that you can effortlessly increase the intensity of the workout by pedalling standing up just as you would do on a standard bike.
Changing the Resistance
Resistance on exercise bikes is adjustable in two ways. A good number of the lower cost models use tension and a belt, higher-priced models use magnetic resistance which is quieter and more dependable. For those using magnetic resistance it is adjusted either by a knob or a pushbutton, which most people find easier to use.
Monitoring Your Heart Rate
It is extremely crucial to be able to monitor your heart rate while training as this is the whole aim of riding your exercise bike in the first place! Always buy an exercise bike with a built-in heart rate monitor so that you can adjust your workouts appropriately. Virtually all the exercise bikes do have this though cheaper ones will often merely have a pulse rate monitor integrated into the handlebars. The high-priced exercise bikes will have exercises that are driven by your heart rate so they adjust themselves to keep your pulse rate at a level that you set. This is a very good aspect but not crucial if you can’t pay for it.
Built-In Workout Programs
Lots of of the cheaper exercise bikes do not have exercise incorporated programs. Although you may consider this is not too much of a disadvantage you will discover that just sitting on the bike and pedalling will become wearisome very swiftly! With exercise programs you can modify your workout and the feedback you get will assist with your motivation. Consoles that give you feedback on distance covered, calories burned and heart rate etc. actually do aid your motivation and keep you exercising for much longer. Most of the exercise bikes in the mid-budget range i.e. between approximately $300 and $600 will give you a reasonable variety of integrated workouts and a moderately good display. More expensive exercise bikes i.e. in the $650 and above range will have a much higher range of workouts and first-rate console displays with a whole range of feedback information.
Conclusion
Naturally, as with other fitness exercise machines, when buying an exercise bike, you get what you pay for. It isn’t a very good plan to buy the lowest cost exercise bike you can find as it won’t last very long and you will not be satisfied with the exercise that you get. It is not obligatory to buy a very high-priced bike but we recommend purchasing one for about $300 which will give you good exercise and keep you motivated.
