Glycemic index, GI,is a system of classifying carbohydrate foods, depending upon the time taken by them to raise the blood-sugar level in the body after eating the food. Faster rise in blood glucose indicates higher GI value, and these food items are not considered healthy. High Glycemic Index foods with GI of 70 or above causes a quick rise in blood-glucose levels. Intermediate GI foods have value of 55-69, and they cause slower rise is blood-sugar. Low Glycemic Index Foods have GI of 54 or less, and they cause slower rise in blood-sugar. GI diet is based on many low GI diet foods, and offers a healthy way to weight loss permanently.

As a part of calorie-controlled plan of eating, the low GI diet foods offer range of benefits in addition to weight loss. The carbohydrates increases insulin levels and blood sugar so low GI diet foods are low in complex carbohydrates that are easy on the body. To follow the GI diet exactly, it is important to know the GI rating of all the carbohydrate foods that you plan to eat.
Some of the low GI diet foods are natural oatmeal porridge, all bran, muesli, whole grain bread, wholegrain rice, basmati rice, sweet potatoes, raw vegetables, nuts, apples, pears, egg whites, walnuts, long grain brown rice, red cabbage, cherries, oranges, unripe bananas, fresh fruit juices, apricots, soy beans, barley, wild rice, peanuts, cashew nuts, strawberry jam, yams, popcorn, club soda and lentils.
It is however important to note that some people have low tolerance level for carbohydrates, even for low GI diet foods. This can become an issue if you are trying to lose weight. So, substitute the higher carb food items with the lower carb foods.
As we eat various types of foods each day, it is not possible to eat all the low GI diet foods. Managing the foods is more realistic and practical way to combine low GI foods in the diet plan. Eating high GI foods along with low GI foods equal the medium GI index. For people following low GI diet food plans, it is important to remember that GI diet is not a miracle diet, and taking low GI diet foods does not mean that you can indulge.
Low GI diet plan is not only a weight loss diet, but is a whole new way to modify the eating patterns that can be followed for the rest of your lives for a healthier and stronger you.
